We know that times are tough being an online entity. Many sites that lived on the 2.0 dream were counting on on the dot-boom to continue. Everyone believed that they could make millions on advertising alone and become the next successful site operated out of the bedroom.
We have first hand knowledge of what site owners were thinking by running the ad network which we recently sold. Many social network developer’s were making big money monthly just on advertising. While many were making the big money, like anything else, many were making pennies monthly.
Many of you have already read the below post done earlier today about our latest release which is embeddable charts for your site. You may be thinking one of two things. One you could be thinking,”What’s the big deal?“, and two, which we hope you are thinking,”Fantastico, another free tool I can use to market my site!”
With this current economic cycle we are in it only makes sense to market your inventory well. What we are offering are the tools you need to promote your sites audience to the advertising community, future investors, etc. Currently you may be reading all the doom and gloom messages about 2009 in advertising as well as investment capital pull out.
Well the truth is, advertising is not pulling out of the internet. No way. That is a false claim only to invoke visions of the eminent collapse. VC’s and individual investors are not pulling out. Caution is the keyword here. People that invest money in new ideas want to be assured that there is a real audience that is highly engaging. Read any site that covers investments such as VentureBeat, and you will see more money being poured in daily.
Advertising will in fact be living online in 2009. It’s not going away. Where else can they advertise since newspapers are going bankrupt, television has been largely replaced by YouTube, Hulu, and other streaming services.
Online is the only place that has a consistently growing audience with active participation daily. More people check their e-mail, visit social networks, watch the news, and generally spend more time online. The above warning about advertising leaving in droves in 2009 is quite the scare tactic that seems to be working on the majority of online businesses.
What advertising will be doing is picking and choosing what sites receive the big money and what sites can will be relegated to lower paying penny per mile advertising. It is something we preached over and over again when we were an ad network. Engagement of your site’s audience. Many of the sites and social network application owners we had in our ad network didn’t get it. They thought it was their god given right to receive the big revenue just because.
Because what?! That is what advertisers will be asking you the site owner in 2009. They have the money. If you have the audience, than you shall receive the big money in 2009. These are the same questions potential investors will be asking in 2009. Whether you believe in advertising as the be all end all for your profit, or if you go the more traditional invest in my idea route – the questions will be the same in the upcoming year. Proof positive of your audience will be something they want to check at the door.
The point of our latest release is all about marketing your audience well, and when you do that, the money you thought was there, really still is there. It hasn’t gone anywhere as other people have written and beat the drum so loudly in order to grab your attention. Advertising has no where else to go but online. They just want to put their money on a proven audience demographic.
