Getting Ahead of a Problem I Caused
Posted by Scott Rafer

David Kirkpatrick was kind enough to give Lookery and me a lot of ink, and I got very excited about what the future would hold. He quoted me, accurately, saying:
When I asked Rafer what he thought was a good application on Facebook, he replied, as I had expected he would, “There aren’t any.” For all the buzz and millions of sign-ups, it is striking how few applications there really do anything people seem much to need.
Ooops. It sounds a lot like I took a poke at current Facebook developers including Lookery’s publishers. What I intended was, “You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet,” per my other quote here:
But [Rafer's] faith in the earthshakingness of Facebook apps is such that he actually said to me: “Now Google might as well not get into the apps business, and finally something will take a bit out of [Microsoft] Office.”

When I asked a developer what he thought was a good ad network on Facebook, he replied, as I had expected he would, “Not lookery.” For all the buzz and tens of sign-ups, it is striking how few ad networks there really do anything people seem much to need.

Sigh. I deserved that.
Anyone else who decides to pile on should at least admit who they are, though I’ll approve non-spam harshing-on-me either way.
I won’t be online much until noon tomorrow PDT, so please don’t get itchy if I’m slow to approve comments.
