Gender and per-application targeting starts

Male-FemaleOur targeting is starting, and it’s starting simple. Later this week, we’ll be offering targeting by gender. Marketers who want to market solely to men or women, or who want to show different ad media to men and women will now be able to do so. Other demographic filters will be introduced over the coming weeks. We hear a lot of demand for age and general location. Further suggestions are welcome.

Per-application pricing will start late this week too. So far, we’ve been allowing advertisers to target specific applications with run-of-network pricing. That has to stop, obviously. Only Insertion Orders placed by EOB PDT Thursday, August 9, 2007, will get that pricing. After that application publishers will be able to set their own rates, and run of network rates will only apply in where it’s actually appropriate.

We’ve been doing run of network ads at fairly low CPM pricing of 120×90 for $.20, 468×60 at $.30, and 160×600 at $.50. We only show each user the same ad three times per day across the network. Gender-specific pricing will be exactly double the rates above in a run-of-network scenario. Individual application publishers will be able to set their own gender-specific rates on a per-application basis. We’ll be recommending that those rates be double the gender-blind rate.

    Hi Dave,
Our prices are right around market for Run of Network inventory on any social network. Prior to the rollout of targeting, that's all this is. Charging a ton more during this early stage just because marketers are desperate to participate in the Facebook buzz is great for short-term cash flow but crummy for building lasting relationships.
